Regenerative medicine is a multidiscipline that brings together tissue engineering, gene therapy, cellular therapeutics and transplantation. Fields that were considered separate are now combined to make new type of treatments a possibility. Despite the economic potential of regenerative medicine, several challenges are delaying the development of cell therapy-based products. The regulatory environment and the market that cell therapies and regenerative medicine have to face are fundamentally different from the traditional drug market. Also, the manufacturing of a living ‘product’ makes the logistics, the types of infrastructure, the storage and the delivery requirements more complex. This requires the establishment of new technologies and techniques to provide standardisation, effectiveness and safety of the product.
The company needs to decide whether to commercialise a product (i.e. sourcing cells from a donor that can be applied universally) or a service (i.e. providing patients with their own stem cells). This choice drastically changes the business model the companies have to adapt. Notably, further organisation is required in the latter example as providing a service of this kind necessitates coordination with hospitals and healthcare professionals.
A final obstacle for translation into the clinic of regenerative medicine products is the ‘valley of death’, defined as the lack of funding between early pre-clinical to successfully completion of Phase II clinical trials. The fact that regenerative medicine is seen as an expensive and risky process with long term timescale makes the investments from the private sector even more difficult to get.
Despite those challenges, there have already been a number of commercialised products that have reached the market and the field of regenerative medicine is attracting increasing commercial interest.
